How To Improve Your Local SEO Results

Search Engine Optimisation or SEO is one of the toughest areas of digital marketing to excel in. The competition to rank on Page 1 of Google is fierce and the search engine algorithms and best practices are changing all the time. It definitely is worth paying more and having someone who knows that they are doing working on your SEO strategy. Get this wrong and you will be penalized heavily be search engines. Earlier on this year, I teamed up with the e-commerce store Yum-Box. When developing the SEO strategy, we looked at a couple of key areas of prioritise. Here they are...

1. Link Juice Matters To quote Woorank "Link juice is the term used in the SEO world to refer to the value or equity passed from one page or site to another. This value is passed through hyperlinks. Search engines see links as votes by other websites that your page is valuable and worth promoting." Link your website URL onto local websites first. If you live in New Zealand, that would be .co.nz or .nz websites, in South Africa it would be .co.za, in Canada it would be .ca etc. 2. Get onto every local online business directory There are many sites where you can set up a business profile for free and create a backlink for your business website. If you have some extra budget, it's worth paying the small membership fee to be on the paid business directories.  If you are looking to start your SEO linkbuilding, Bright Local has a great list of the Top 50 Free Business Directories


3. Choose the 3 Most Important Keywords You Want to Rank For


There's a saying which goes "the person who chases two rabbits catches none."


When choosing what keywords you want to rank for, limit it to three keywords and have a look at what the search traffic and competition for those keywords is on a Keyword Planner. 


Have a look at keywords that have a high search volume but low competition.


Here's an example which I've included for my own industry (digital marketing) in the screenshot below. From this research, it looks like internet marketing service, edm marketing and digital marketing consultant are the best keywords to try and rank for. 


4. Don't Write Rubbish


Preparing high quality content that is useful, free of grammatical mistakes and not stuffed with the same keyword is one of the best ways to improve your SEO, web presence and attract the right customers.


The goal posts for what search engines prioritise changes all the time, but some things remain constant. Your website needs to add value to the person who is visiting based on the keyword search and phrase they entered. If that person spends more time on your website and consumes your content, chances are your website will rank higher.


When writing your SEO business descriptions, Web 2.0's and guest articles, always make sure you do this yourself or hire someone who is a professional writer. Do not rely on outsourced link-builders who only have a basic understanding of your native language.Thanks for reading this everyone.
